If you want to hike a section of Brittany’s Emerald Coast that is truly rugged and beautiful, look no further than this walk. The walk begins and ends in Cancale, the oyster capital of Brittany. It combines dramatic coastal views with the region’s famous seafood.

Cancale is the oyster capital of France. Louis XIV famously ordered his oysters from here, and today the town remains one of the most important shellfish ports on the Emerald Coast.

Steeped in history and a long tradition of fishing, the people of Cancale are proud of their reputation and it isn’t hard to figure out why. Either start or end your hike at the oyster market. Look for the lighthouse at the end of the harbour, flying Cancale’s green flag decorated with a ship surrounded by oysters.

This coastal hike from Cancale to Pointe du Grouin explores one of the most rugged stretches of Brittany’s Emerald Coast. Beginning in Cancale, the famous oyster port overlooking the Bay of Mont-Saint-Michel, the route follows the GR34 past hidden coves, sandy beaches and dramatic cliff-top viewpoints.

The walk reaches its climax at Pointe du Grouin, a windswept headland with sweeping views across the bay, before returning inland through woodland and the town of Cancale itself.

Route Description

This hike begins at the Cancale oyster market, where the GR34 coastal path climbs above the harbour before heading north along the Emerald Coast.

The trail follows the rugged coastline toward Pointe du Grouin, passing a sequence of small coves and beaches along the way. The first is Port Briac, followed by the more secluded Port Picain. Before reaching the larger sandy beach at Port Mer, with several restaurants; a popular stopping point for swimmers and walkers.

Beyond Port Mer the cliffs grow more exposed as the path approaches Pointe du Grouin, a dramatic rocky headland overlooking the Bay of Mont-Saint-Michel.

After enjoying the views from the headland, retrace the route until Port Picain where it leaves the GR34 and turns inland through the Bois de Chevrier, a shaded woodland that offers a peaceful contrast to the exposed coastal cliffs.

The final section descends back into Cancale, passing through the town before returning to the harbour and oyster market where the walk began.

1. Cancale Oyster Market

Begin at the Marché aux Huîtres on Cancale’s harbourfront. Follow the GR34 as it climbs above the port and begins tracing the rugged coastline north.

2. Headlands & Beaches

The trail quickly reaches the first small coves along the route. Port Briac and Port Picain offer quiet beaches framed by rocky headlands.

3. Port Mer

Further along lies Port Mer, the largest on this stretch of coast. With cafés and facilities nearby, it’s a natural place to pause before continuing toward the headland.

4. Pointe du Grouin

The path climbs toward Pointe du Grouin, a dramatic rocky headland where seabirds circle above the cliffs. After soaking in the views, retrace your route back along the same trail.

5. Turning Inland

At Port Picain look for a trail to the right of the coastal path. The route turns inland through the Bois de Chevrier, a shaded woodland trail that offers a calm contrast to the exposed coastal scenery.

6. Return to Cancale

The final section of the hike returns through the town of Cancale itself. Explore its quiet streets. Passing the church of St-Méen before descending to the harbour where the walk began.

Points of Interest

  • Marché aux Huîtres de Cancale: Cancale’s famous oyster market sits directly on the harbour front and is the best place to taste oysters fresh from the bay. Choose between flat oysters (huîtres plates) and round oysters (huîtres creuses), add a squeeze of lemon and enjoy them overlooking the sea.
  • Islands of the Bay: Just offshore from the hiking trail lie several small islands. The most striking is Île des Rimains, home to an 18th-century fort and now a private island. Nearby Île des Landes is a protected bird sanctuary where seabirds nest undisturbed along the cliffs.
  • Pointe du Grouin: The name “Grouin” comes from the Breton word grouin, meaning “snout”, a reference to the shape of the rocky headland projecting into the sea.
  • Bay of Mont-Saint-Michel: Along this route you are looking across the wide Bay of Mont-Saint-Michel. The famous abbey itself lies just across the border in Normandy and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1979. On clear days you may be able to spot the distinctive silhouette of the abbey rising on the horizon.
  • Église Saint-Méen: On the return through town the route passes Église Saint-Méen, located in the centre of Cancale. The square nearby hosts the town’s lively Saturday market, where local producers sell seafood, vegetables, cheeses and Breton specialities. In front of the church stands the Fontaine des Laveuses d’Huîtres, commemorating the women who once washed oysters from the bay before they were sold in the market below.

Practical Tips

Footwear – Sturdy walking shoes are recommended. The GR34 here includes rocky sections, steep steps and uneven terrain.
Safety – The coastal path is exposed with steep cliffs in places. Take care in windy weather and stay on the marked trail.
Water & Snacks – Bring water and snacks for the walk. Only Port Mer has cafés and facilities along the route.

Shorter Alternative

Distance: 7.9 km

Difficulty: Easy – Moderate
Start/Finish: Oyster market, Cancale

A shorter option follows the GR34 from Cancale past Port Briac and Port Picain before turning inland through the Bois de Chevrier and returning through the town. This route still captures the rugged coastline while leaving more time to relax in Cancale – whether that means wandering through the town or sitting at the oyster market watching the world go by.
